It’s that time of year again where Pantone name their Colour of the Year. This year they have announced, only for the second time, two colours, Illuminating Yellow & Ultimate Grey.

The colour experts at Pantone have stated ”The union of an enduring Ultimate Gray with the vibrant yellow Illuminating expresses a message of positivity supported by fortitude. Practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic, this is a colour combination that gives us resilience and hope. We need to feel encouraged and uplifted; this is essential to the human spirit.”

In the current situation this decision is very apt and it is nice to see that even those who influence the fashion and interiors industries are looking for ways to lift the spirit of the nation.

This choice sees the continuance of the ever popular grey but in a deep, rich tone, encouraging warmth in the home. As we have discovered over the last few years grey is a great base colour for the home, working as the new neutral. It can be layered in different shades with various textures for a simple, sophisticated look, or it can be mixed with any number of colours to create styles that suit every personality. However, people often worry that using grey in the home will make it feel cold and unwelcoming, but through the introduction of this vibrant yellow this is not the case. This striking contrasting colour will add a touch of sunshine to any room, instantly lifting any grey.

Illuminating Yellow is an interesting choice, it is a joyful colour that is associated with hope, laughter and sunny days, and we could all do with a bit of that. When used in interiors it can add energy to a scheme, instantly making the room feel cheerful. It is perfect for a kitchen where you start your day, giving you a boost. However yellow can be quite tiring on the eyes, so not suitable for rooms where you need to concentrate such as studies or home offices.

If you like the idea of yellow but are a little scared try using it as an accent colour on cushions, a rug or a light, this small splash against the grey will instantly give it a lift.
